SPORTOLOGICALLY SPEAKING
The annual award for the best pitcher in Japanese professional baseball is named for Eiji Sawamura. In 1934, when he was 17 years old, Sawamura pitched against the American all-star team that was touring Japan. In five innings of work, he struck out nine of the Major League players, including Hall of Famers Charlie Gehringer, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx – in succession.
