When Thomas Hicks asked for water at the 10-mile mark of the 1904 Olympic marathon, he was denied a drink. Three miles later, he asked again and received sulphate of strychnine and an egg white. A mile later, as his face turned ashen white, he received more strychnine, two more eggs, and a sip of brandy. He went on to win the race.
