Tom Brady led the team to unprecedented success with a 20-season keynote address with the New England Patriots in March.
The Patriots made quarterbacks before becoming one of the most successful players on the planet, marking the 20th anniversary on April 16th.
Sri Lankan cricket icon – offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan – is also the day when tennis legend Arthur Ashe decided to call it a day, April 1, 1980.
We take a look back at what happened earlier this day throughout the sport.
2000 – The beginning of the Brady era
Future superstars can somehow catch a crack in the NFL Draft, with Brady a prime example of that.
The 22-year-old quarterback was selected from the University of New England Michigan with the 5th pick in the NFL Draft.
After six Super Bowl victories, nine AFC titles and six Pro Bowl appearances, Brady finally made time for his Patriots career earlier this year, joining the Tamp Bay Buccaneers as a free agent.
1972 – A star was born
Eighteen years before Brady’s NFL career began, one of the best spinners in cricket was born.
Muralitharan, known for his controversial bowling action, made his international debut at 3 and became the top wicket-taker in the history of Tests and ODIs, scoring 5 runs in 5 overs and 5 overs.
The test record was between Muralitharan and Shane Warne until his retirement in 2007. Muralitharan sealed his 8th and final wicket with Sri Lanka’s win against Sri Lanka in the 21st.
1980 – Asha calls time in a glittering career
The first player to win the US Open as an inaugural event, Ashe earned two more Grand Slam titles – one in Australia in 1970 and five at Wimbledon five years later.
After competing in four more Grand Slam singles finals, Ash retired on April 7, April 1, though he was associated with tennis and captained the US Davis Cup team.
However, three years later, Ashi underwent a heart operation, in which he was believed to have been given an infected blood transfusion from an HIV infection.
The virus was detected in 1, but Ashe did not make it public in 1992. He died the next year at the age of 49. Named after the main court in New York’s Flushing Meadows.
27 – Derby Anand ends Man City’s miserable FA Cup run
Manchester City have become one of the leading teams in world football in recent seasons but they are still growing after the acquisition of Sheikh Mansour three years ago in 20 years.
However, City took a huge step toward winning their first FA Cup in five years due to a Yaya Tour strike against rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals.
The Stoke City side had to beat the Roberto Mancini side in the final before their first Premier League title in dramatic fashion on the final day of the next season.
