Jenson Button has expressed his surprise that Sebastian Vettel will go his way with “a big red door” at Ferrari and hopes it won’t be his last Formula One season.
It was announced on Tuesday that the four-time F1 World Champion would not be with Scuderia outside this year.
Vettel denied that the two sides had “a common desire to be together” as a reason to leave.
Button clearly thought that Vettel could sign a new contract with the Italian team that joined from the Red Bull in 2015.
2009 F1 champion Brit Button believes the 32-year-old’s resignation will be a big loss for the sport.
He tweeted: “Well this is something amazing, just Vettel and Binoto [Mattia, Ferrari’s team principal] Find out the real reason for the apple walk / help from the very big red door later this year.
“Hopefully Vettel wants to continue because it would be a shame to lose a driver with such talent from the F1 grid.”
