Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn has told Tired Taylor that he cannot promise him an early quarterback job before he competes against Justin Herbert.
The Chargers brought former Oregon QB Herbert to full six in last week’s NFL Draft.
Lynn and Taylor, who previously worked with the Buffalo Bills, came after he spoke positively about the prospects for an experienced team leadership for 2020.
Now, Taylor will start training camp first on the depth chart, but jockey Herbert will have a chance to win the job, and Lynn is happy to drop the 22-year-old to the top of the regular season action.
Lynn told Sports Illustrated, “We’re going into this: the first day, Tired Taylor is going to start it.”
“He has earned this right. His teammates respect hell out of him. He’s a leader in this football team.
“But it’s a competition, bro. There’s a competition in every position, not just that. If this young man goes there and wins the job, I just can’t say it’s going to be the first quarterback for a whole year of Tyrode.”

Herbert was the third Cubi to climb five behind Cincinnati Bengals ’top pick Joe Buro and the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagoveloa.
Herbert’s interim personality was often referred to as negative during the drafting process, but Lin has no worries on that front because of the long-term replacement team for Philip Rivers.
Lynn added, “I saw how he played the game and how his teammates reacted to him on the football field and I said, ‘It’s not a problem.’
“I don’t know why the quarterback should say it out loud. There’s a time for him to add up loudly, not for him to have time.”
“You don’t have to say out loud to be a great leader. You don’t have to be outspoken to be a great leader.
“[Watching the tape], He just grew on me. He used to keep this line for his teammates.
“Our young quarterback can learn a lot from Teward Taylor. One of the key players on our team is Tyrode Taylor, and he said absolutely nothing.”
