Tahitian Chong praised Manchester United as “a big family”, saying the club’s solidarity inspired him as he aimed to emulate former Red Devils winger Ryan Giggs.

Chong debuted for the first team in January 2019 and has been pushing for a role in Ole Gunnar Salskazar’s plans since making some impressive cameos off the bench.

The 28-year-old told the club’s official website that Giggs, who retired from football at 27, was among the players who set a trail for him to follow.

“I think there are a few names I’d probably have with Ronaldinho or Ryan Giggs,” Chong replied when a player inspired him when he was growing up.

“I don’t think I’ve ever tried to model a player myself. I think you look at the players and you see them doing stuff and you try to copy that one way.

“But I’d probably say Ryan Giggs is one of them. Or Arjen Robben is one of them.”

Chong, who joined United from Feyenoord’s academy in 2016, signed a new contract at Old Trafford in March.

After the club resisted Barcelona and Juventus’ interest in securing Chong’s future until 2022, Solskire reflected his “great potential.”

Chong said the atmosphere around the club has intensified his progress since his arrival: “For me, coming to the club at 8pm was exactly what everyone was like.

“This is the unification of United. When I first came, I just saw that United is a big family. And it really is. It was amazing to see me as a 16-year-old.

“Every single day is a new day to work hard and improve yourself as a young player.

“I think it’s most important when you’re young – try to develop and improve every day, and you work hard”
