Roma coach Paolo Fonseca insisted he would do his best to keep defender Chris Smalling at Serie A.
Smuggling, 30, has been impressed with Manchester United’s loan to Roma this season, but reports suggest they may be unable to afford a transfer fee for center-backs even if they want to keep him.
However, Fonseca praised his influence in Rome and is keen to keep England international 31 times.
“I will try my best to keep him in Rome next year as well. I know he wants to stay, let’s see what happens,” he told ESPN on Friday.
“He’s an amazing man, so humble, so professional. He was admired by fans and established himself as one of the leaders in the dressing room.
“It’s not easy for English central defenders to adapt to Italian football so quickly. The record there isn’t good, but he’s surprised.”
Before the season was postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, Roma had 28 short appearances in all competitions.
