In the eyes of alpha tour driver Pierre Gasili, Fernando Alonso’s return to Formula One would be an “amazing” possibility.

A dramatic week at F1 began when Sebastian Vettel announced that he would leave Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season.

Scuderia immediately replaced him with Carlos Sanchez, whose McLaren seat will be filled by current Renault driver Daniel Ricardo.

With Mercedes and Red Bull Vettel unlikely to make it, the Renault vacancy is seen as the best chance to stay on the grid in Germany if he wants to stay in the game.

However, Alonso has become another candidate for the seat if he is tempted to return dramatically.

The Spaniard won two of his world championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

Now 38, Alonso has not raced to the F1 since four failed years after finishing in 2018 with McLaren, as the team struggled with their Honda engine.

The Brazilian is excited to speculate about the possible return of Frenchman Gaselle Alonso, who won the first podium of his career in the penalty race of the 2019 season.

He thinks the talent driver can only benefit from F1’s appeal and doesn’t think any return is out of the question despite the two seasons being away.

“I think everything is possible with Fernando,” Gasley told Status Performance News.

“I think, why not? Formula One can only do well to bring in someone as talented as the world champion, Fernando in the grid.

“I think it would be somehow surprising to see him back.

“Who could be what that’s going to happen? I think it’s a very exciting time for Formula One.”

Alonso has been active in motorsport since leaving the F1, appearing in the Indica series, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the FIA World Endurance Championship and the Sportscar Championship.

He recently took part in the 2020 Dakar Rally and is ranked 13th.
