According to Fabio Cannavaro, Barcelona superstar is not Lionel Messi, but the best Diego Maradona of all time.
Both Maradona and Messi are considered the best players and the stability of the Argentine pair at the top of football history is often disputed.
Messi holds the record six-time Ballon d’Or winner, but former Italian defender Convanaro believes 198 World Cup champion Maradona is the best of all time.
“I have a lot of respect for Messi. He is one of the best for the new generation, but Maradona is different because football was different,” said Canvarao, who is now the head coach of Chinese Super League giant Guangzhou Evergrande after captaining Italy at the 2006 World Cup. – Told Sky Sports.
“They kicked him a lot, but he was always in control and he was tough.
“Messi is at the top, but Maradona is another world. I never compare him to any other player. I’ve never seen Pel, but I’ve seen Maradona, I’ve watched every game for seven years.
“He’s not one of the best, he’s the best.”
Maradona has won a silver medal at Barcelona, helping the Spanish giants to the Copa del Rey, Copa de la Liga and Supercopa de Espaানারa.
The 59-year-old became an icon with Napoli, where he won two Serie A titles, as well as the UEFA Cup, Copa Italia and Supercopa Italiana.
Messi has won 10 La Liga crowns and four Champions League titles among other honors at Barcelona, although he has not tasted senior success with Argentina.
