Manuel Neuer wants to captain Bayern Munich until 2023 and hopes to lead them to the final of the 2022 Home Champions League at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern’s goalkeeper and captain signed an extension to a deal on Wednesday that was to end at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

He is now tied with Bayern until 2023, although he will add to the competition from next season, when Alexander Nubel joins former Newark club Schalke.

But Newer obviously has a design to hold his place as the first among the positions and he wants to keep the armband for the duration of his contract.

“I am convinced by our team and the whole club and I am sure we will play successful football in the years to come,” he told Club Media.

“Of course, we have some goals that we can reach in the current season. We have a good team for the next few years and it is very fun to work for FC Bayern as captain. This is also my job and I want to continue until 2023.”

Bayern have led the Bundesliga – which resumed last weekend after being suspended due to a coronavirus epidemic since March – by four points.

They are also in the DFB-Pokal semifinals and have won 3-0 against Chelsea in the last 16th leg of the Champions League.

Newer is hopeful Bayern will be able to complete the trouble and the Champions League final came to his stadium at the same venue in May 2022, 10 years after the penalty shoot-out defeat to the Champions League final champion.

He added, “You definitely want to win everything. Start every year from the start. There’s a championship now to win this year and we’re still in every competition,” he added.

“But right now it’s a different situation for us and everyone has to adjust to the current situation, not just our football players.

“One of our biggest goals for the next few years is to get a chance to play in the final of the Home Champions League, as we did in 2012. 2022 will be another European final in Munich, which is a great encouragement for me and the whole team.

“It will be a dream for all of us to reach this final at home.”
