Gambhir, who captained the Kolkata Knight Riders for two IPL titles, thought that winning the title was a great captain.

“I think it’s Rohit Sharma. He has won it four times. Speaking at the Star Sports Cricket Connected Show, Gambhir said captaincy is all about winning trophies.

Southpaw led the Delhi Daredevils for several seasons before going to the Knight Riders in 2002 and heading into a team owned by Shah Rukh Khan in his first season as captain.

Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful captains of the IPL, took over as the captain of MI in the middle of Ricky Ponting through IPL 20, leading him to four titles (2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019).

Gambhir was chosen as the best of the lot by choosing among the list of high-profile captains like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“He will also be the most successful IPL captain of all time. He already has 3, he can probably finish under 6 – 7 under his belt, “Gambhir said.

Former batting coach Sanjay Bangar also echoed Gambhir’s statement and cited MI’s ability to win the nearest match as a characteristic of the captain’s success as a captain.

One of only four captains to lead the team as captain in more than 4 IPL matches, the MI captain has won 60 of 104 matches. The four-time champion captain also set the record for the third-highest run in tournament history, scoring 5 runs from 5 matches at a strike rate of 5.22.
